 Story Time

Come join Mrs.Liza and her story time friends on either a Tuesday morning at 10:00 or a Wednesday morning at 11:15*. There are always lots of wiggles & giggles with this crowd.  Story times are ALWAYS FUN in Highgate!

* Story times follow the school schedule.

Little Explorer Program

Little Explorer’s offers children ages 3-5 and their families an exciting opportunity to interact with nature & their environment in a hands on and fun way! Our goal is to bring a year long program, full of fun, education and hands on activities to children ages 3-5. Interested families are asked to contact the library for further information and to find out how they can get involved.

Pajama Story Hour

Come do some wiggles and share some giggles with us…while in your Pajamas! Please check our calendar link for scheduled dates.

Stuffed Animal Sleepovers

Once a year we hold a sleepover for Stuffed Animals ONLY. This unique event has proven to be lots of fun for residents of all ages! Families are able to enjoy a pj story hour with the Traveling Storyteller before leaving their furry friends behind for the evening. In the morning, everyone is invited back to enjoy a slide show of the animal’s sleepover adventures  and a light breakfast.

ASK (After School Kids) Program

This program gives children in grades first through fourth the opportunity to explore their local public library and have fun at the same time!

Summer Reading Program

This is a six week program packed full of fun and excitement! Each year the theme changes, so no two summers are ever the same. This is open to children of all ages. For a schedule of events, please see our calendar link.

Lending Book Bag Programs: Daycare Express ~ Preschool Take & Learn

If you would like to receive monthly deliveries of theme based books and activities for your daycare to enjoy, please contact us and we will get you set up. We also work closely with our local preschool and offer a preschool Take & Learn book program to interested families. These books & activities are delivered to the classroom about 2 times a month for registered families to take home and enjoy.

Born To Read Program

Every Spring the Highgate Public Library holds a Born to Read party for all babies born in Highgate the previous year. Each baby has a book dedicated to the library in their honor. This new book is then added to the library’s collection. This program began in 2000 and each year about 30 new books are added to the Children’s collection through this event! Babies also receive a book to take home and enjoy.

Special Programs & Performances

Every so often we offer special performances and programs for children and their families.  Some of our favorites are Mr.K from Exoridum, The Traveling Storyteller and Backpack Theatre, which involves some of our finest local actors!  Watch our calendar of events for dates and times.

Mother Goose Programs

All Mother Goose Programs™ include picture books, training, activity guides and educator resource manuals that transform the act of reading to children into multidimensional and powerful learning experiences. These include learning in math, science, social studies, environmental awareness and language and reading skills. All programs and products are standards-based and have been rigorously evaluated.

Mother Goose programs*: Beginning with Mother Goose, Especially For Dads, Growing with Mother Goose, Mother Goose Asks “Why?”, You Can Count on Mother Goose, Mother Goose Meets Mother Nature, What’s the BIG idea?

*We try to offer at least one of these programs for families per year. We have been very fortunate to have had grant funding cover the cost of the materials given out to families through these programs over the past 4 years.

Research tells us that all good young readers share the following characteristics:

  • They have had a lot of experience with print.
  • They have heard complex uses of language, both in print and orally.
  • They have learned that there is a general relationship between printed words and spoken sounds.
  • They have had many, many books read to them.
  •  Mother Goose Programs for families promote frequent conversations about books and shared activities in the home.
  • Mother Goose Programs actively involve children in conversation, stories and activities that promote expanded vocabulary and complex thinking.
  • Mother Goose Programs help adults create reading experiences that give children all the reading building blocks
    * All this information and further research on these programs can be viewed on the Vermont Center for the books website at:  http://www.mothergooseprograms.org/index_original.php
